Guitar Wiz Chrome extension privacy

Effective November 3, 2026. This policy covers Guitar Wiz – Chords, the combined chord search and webpage discovery extension.

Local tools, local data

The extension bundles its chord catalog, diagrams, fonts and sampled guitar audio. Core features make no external network requests. The extension includes no analytics, advertising, remote configuration, fingerprinting or backend service. We do not receive your searches, page text, saved chords or progressions.

Search chords

Searching chords does not read webpage content. It uses Chrome’s local extension storage for favorites, recent chord searches, the last viewed shape and your theme. This data stays in the browser profile and is not synced by the extension.

This page

Only after you open the extension from its toolbar icon and request a scan, the extension reads accessible visible text in the main frame of the selected tab. Chord recognition and confidence scoring take place in your browser. No page text is sent to Guitar Wiz or another service.

Matched chord symbols, occurrence positions and detected sequences are kept temporarily in memory and Chrome session storage to populate the side panel. Scan records are removed on page navigation or tab close, and session storage is cleared when the browser session ends. We do not store entire webpages, text excerpts or a browsing history.

When you explicitly save a progression, local storage retains its chord sequence, optional title and transposition settings. A source URL is saved only if you select “Include source URL in this save.” A URL may itself contain sensitive information; leave that option unchecked if you do not want to retain it. Page highlighting is temporary and does not rewrite the source text.

Permissions

The combined extension requests activeTab for temporary access after a toolbar action, scripting to run its packaged local text scanner, sidePanel for the explorer, and storage for temporary scans and explicit local saves. It requests no blanket website permissions and never scans websites automatically in the background.

Your controls

Use “Clear saved data” in the Library to delete favorites and search history. In the Finder, delete a saved progression individually or choose “Clear saved progressions.” Uninstalling the extension removes its local storage. Chrome also lets you revoke file-URL access or disable the extension. Theme preferences remain until cleared through Chrome or uninstall.

Optional external links

Opening guitarwiz.app or the App Store is your choice. Website links include ordinary campaign URL parameters identifying the extension, never source-page content. App Store links distinguish referrals from chord search and page discovery using separate campaign names. The website’s existing analytics may measure visits and outbound App Store clicks under its website privacy policy. Apple may report aggregate campaign-attributed downloads subject to its reporting rules. The extension itself sends no analytics events.
