You can tune a guitar with the microphone on your Apple Watch using Guitar Wiz. Open the tuner, allow microphone access and play one string at a time while watching the pitch display.

The Watch tuner runs on the watch, so you do not need to hold your iPhone beside the guitar during tuning. For an overview of the app's other wrist-based tools, see [Guitar Wiz for Apple Watch](/apple-watch/).

## Step 1: Install Guitar Wiz on Your Watch

If you already have Guitar Wiz on your iPhone, open the **Watch** app on the iPhone and check **My Watch**. If Guitar Wiz appears under **Available Apps**, tap **Install**.

You can also search for Guitar Wiz in the App Store on the watch. Check the listing's compatibility and purchase information for your device. Apple's [guide to installing Watch apps](https://support.apple.com/guide/watch/apd99e3c6a68/watchos) covers both installation methods.

Once installed, open Guitar Wiz on the watch and select **Tuner**. Installation and access to paid features are separate; follow any access or purchase prompt shown in your version of the app.

## Step 2: Allow Microphone Access

The tuner needs to hear the guitar through the watch's microphone. Allow microphone access when prompted.

If access has been denied, the app displays a microphone-access message. On the watch, check **Settings > Privacy & Security > Microphone** and allow Guitar Wiz. The privacy menu wording can vary by watchOS version; look for the Microphone permission if your watch uses a different label. Then return to the tuner.

Start in a quiet room. Stop backing tracks or other music while tuning, and keep clothing from covering the watch's microphone. Hold the guitar comfortably and position your wrist so you can read the display without twisting your fretting hand.

## Step 3: Tune to the Correct String Notes

For a six-string guitar in standard tuning, use these targets:

| String | Position | Target note |
| --- | --- | --- |
| 6 | Thickest | E, the lower E |
| 5 | Next | A |
| 4 | Next | D |
| 3 | Next | G |
| 2 | Next | B |
| 1 | Thinnest | E, the higher E |

Pluck the thickest string once and let it ring. Mute the other strings with your free fingers so they do not compete with it.

Check the detected note before making fine adjustments. **Flat** means the pitch is below the target; gently tighten the correct tuning peg to raise it. **Sharp** means it is above the target; loosen the peg to lower it. Use small movements and pluck again after each adjustment.

If the guitar is far out of tune, a centered reading on the wrong note is still the wrong tuning. Identify the string and target first. Do not keep tightening a string just because you see an E: the two E strings belong in different octaves.

For a fuller explanation of string names, read [Standard Guitar Tuning](/articles/standard-guitar-tuning/).

## Step 4: Recheck All Six Strings

Move through E, A, D, G, B and E, then make a second pass. Large adjustments change the tension across the guitar and can affect strings you have already tuned, especially on instruments with a floating bridge.

Play a familiar chord and listen. If the open strings tune correctly but fretted chords still sound wrong, check finger pressure and the instrument's intonation. That problem may need a playing or setup adjustment rather than another pass through the tuner.

## When the Watch Tuner Does Not Respond

| What you notice | What to try |
| --- | --- |
| A microphone-access message | Enable Guitar Wiz's microphone permission on the watch, then reopen the tuner |
| No stable note appears | Move somewhere quieter, uncover the microphone and pluck one string again |
| The note keeps changing | Mute unused strings and stop any music or conversation close to the watch |
| The reading shifts just after a strong pluck | Pluck more gently and let the initial attack settle before adjusting |
| The note is centered but the string sounds wrong | Confirm the target note and octave for that string |
| Tuning is difficult during a loud rehearsal | Use a vibration-based clip-on or a suitable direct-input tuner |

If the app appears stuck after checking permission and sound levels, close and reopen it. Also check for available app and watchOS updates if the problem persists.

## Watch Tuner, Phone App or Clip-On?

A Watch tuner is convenient for quick checks when you can hear the guitar clearly. A phone gives you a larger display. A vibration-based clip-on can be useful when nearby sound interferes with microphone detection.

The watch's location on your wrist does not remove background noise. In a loud room, changing the input method can be more useful than moving the watch a few inches.

Our [guide to guitar tuner types](/articles/best-guitar-tuners/) compares apps, clip-ons and pedals by playing situation. For phone setup, see [Can You Use Your Phone to Tune Your Guitar?](/articles/can-you-use-your-phone-to-tune-your-guitar/).

## Make Tuning Part of Your Practice

Check the strings before your first exercise, after changing tuning and whenever the guitar starts to sound unsettled. Once tuned, move on to a short chord or rhythm exercise while the sound is fresh in your ear.

## FAQ

### Does my iPhone need to be next to the guitar?

No. Guitar Wiz's Watch tuner uses the watch's microphone and runs on the watch. Installation, downloads and purchases may still require the appropriate connection and account setup.

### Can I tune an electric guitar with Apple Watch?

Yes, if the watch microphone can hear a clear note. An unplugged electric guitar may be quiet, so move to a quiet room or use a clean, modest amplifier sound. For noisy stages, consider a tuner that receives the instrument signal directly.

### Is Apple Watch tuning accurate enough for practice?

A clear, stable microphone signal makes it useful for routine tuning checks. Background sound, ringing strings and an unclear target note can make tuning harder. This guide does not claim a measured accuracy advantage over a phone, clip-on or pedal tuner.
